研究领域（方向）

领导华大中心经过艰苦的拼搏，在世界上首次利用全基因组“霰弹法”策略对大型植物基因组进行测序，独立完成了超级杂交水稻父本籼稻“9311”基因组（大小约为4.6亿个碱基对）的“工作框架图”。该项目的完成，建立和完善了基因组学、生物信息学和蛋白质组学研究的多个技术平台，其水平与发达国家齐步，使我国成为继美国之后的第二个具有全面测定和分析大型全基因组能力的国家，而且从无到有地开发了重复序列识别及注释系统，并率先公布了数据库，促进了“国际联盟”的工作进程，在国际上产生了巨大而深远的影响。尤其在抗击非典行动中，带领年轻人团队，同舟共济，团结一心，在SARS冠状病毒的基因组研究及建立诊断方法上又做出了贡献，使我国的基因组研究走向了世界，得到了国内外同行与有关部门的肯定。杨教授及其团队所承担的人类基因组、水稻基因组以及家猪、家鸡、家蚕基因组等重大项目使我国的基因组研究得以跻身于世界前沿。

科研项目

一直从事基因组科学的研究。主持完成的 “人类基因组计划—中国卷”使中国成为这一被称为“二十世纪登月计划”的宏伟项目的成员国，得到了各国领导人和国际科学界的高度赞扬。杨焕明教授及其团队（“华大基因”）所承担的人类基因组、水稻基因组以及家猪、家鸡、家蚕基因组等重大项目使我国的基因组研究得以跻身于世界前沿。2003年，“华大基因”又在水稻基因组完成图、家蚕基因组“框架图”的绘制以及SARS冠状病毒的基因组研究及建立诊断方法都做出了新的成绩。杨焕明教授还特别关注基因组研究的社会影响和基因知识的普及。
